Allowing the awareness of ones self to be conscious of ones existence can be termed, Enlightenment.

How can you allow awareness?
Understand that the awareness is already present, your mind just can't see it yet. Stop searching for an external cause that you think you will result in an expansion of awareness and allow yourself to be open, honest, kind and compassionate, then your awareness will reveal itself. It's much like washing your window from inside your house so you can see the sun. Once the window is clear, the mind is pure and can then begin to clearly see Truth.

What blocks the ability to be aware?
The multi-layored ego. Remove each layer of the onion until you reach the center. Metaphorically speaking, you can't remove the layers but instead transcend them.

What layers are your referring to?
Fear, judgment, force, control, etc. These are often times misperceptions that are picked up while contextualizing your reality in this life or in other lives (passed through via karma).

Are there different layers to Enlightenment?
Yes, but not in the way your mind comprehends (linear perception). The different levels of Enlightenment are stages of awareness of ones own existence.
